Why some Indian cities have ten area nodes and others have none yet

Area-level coverage tracks editorial and search signal, not population rank — an uneven graph, built this way, ends up more useful than an evenly shallow one.

Look across Invcity's graph today and the coverage is visibly uneven: some cities have a dozen or more individually mapped areas, each with its own history, geography, and search identity. Most have none yet — the city node exists, but nothing beneath it. That unevenness isn't an oversight to apologize for. It's an honest reflection of where the work has actually happened so far, and it's worth explaining rather than smoothing over.

Coverage follows editorial and search signal, not population

Area-level mapping isn't allocated by city size or national importance — if it were, every state capital would already have dozens of area pages. It's allocated by where a corridor, a neighbourhood pattern, or a search signal made a strong enough case to justify the work: a highway that visibly built a sequence of suburbs, an administrative absorption pattern worth documenting area by area, a cluster of search queries that made clear people were looking for something more specific than the city-level page could answer. Invcity's methodology treats that kind of evidence as the trigger for going deeper on a given city, rather than working through a population-ranked list mechanically.

What an empty layer actually signals

A city with no area nodes yet isn't a city judged less important. It's a city where the case for going deeper hasn't been made — or hasn't been made yet — in the way it clearly has been for Bengaluru's southern industrial corridor or Mumbai's textile-market layer. That's a meaningfully different claim than "this city doesn't matter," and collapsing the two would misrepresent both what the graph currently contains and why.

Why this will keep being uneven, on purpose

The honest expectation isn't that every city eventually gets the same depth of area-level coverage — it's that depth keeps tracking wherever the strongest editorial and search case exists next, city by city, corridor by corridor, rather than being spread evenly as a matter of policy. An uneven graph, built this way, ends up more useful than an evenly shallow one would be: better to have thirteen well-documented areas in one corridor than one thin, undifferentiated area page in every city at once.
