Varanasi's Smart City administration announced in April 2026 that an app-based public bike-sharing system — more than 30 docking stations, over 300 bicycles and e-bikes — was scheduled to go fully operational from 1 August 2026. It's a modest-sounding transit upgrade for a city whose defining transport problem has never really been about bicycles.
What was actually announced
Smart City public relations officer Shakambhari Nandan confirmed the scope: more than 30 docking stations distributed across the city, over 300 bicycles and e-bikes stationed at them, managed through a mobile app rather than a staffed rental counter — the now-standard dockless-adjacent model used in bike-share systems elsewhere in India. The stated target audience is specific: pilgrims and tourists needing short trips between ghats, temples, and the old city's narrow lanes, and students preparing for competitive exams who need an affordable, flexible way to move around without depending on the city's often-congested road network.
A bike-share system is a small transit intervention almost everywhere it's tried. In a city built on lanes too narrow for most other transport to enter, it's closer to the right-sized tool for the actual geography.
The part worth checking, not assuming
The scheme was announced with an August 2026 operational target — a month before this piece was published.
