Allahabad or Prayagraj? Why the older name still dominates
Renamed in 2018 ahead of the Kumbh Mela, but two of the city's biggest institutions never changed their names — which is a large part of why "Allahabad" hasn't gone away.
Search for information on Prayagraj and you'll find a city still widely known by its older name — Allahabad remains in everyday use, on institution names, and in casual conversation, even though the official renaming happened years ago.
What changed, and when
The Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved renaming Allahabad to Prayagraj on 16 October 2018, and the change took effect immediately — no staged notification process like Gurugram's. The timing was deliberate: the state government wanted the new name in place ahead of the 2019 Kumbh Mela, the massive religious gathering held at the city's river confluence, arguing that "Prayagraj" better reflected the site's ancient religious significance than the Mughal-era name "Allahabad."
Why "Allahabad" persists
The renaming came with less transition time than some other Indian city renamings, and several major institutions — Allahabad University, Allahabad High Court — kept their original names, since renaming a court or a century-old university is a separate, slower process from renaming a city. That institutional persistence is a big part of why "Allahabad" stays in circulation: searches for the court, the university, or historical references default to the older name even when referring to something located in present-day Prayagraj.
Same city, both names
Whether a search or a reference uses Allahabad or Prayagraj, it points to the same city at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers — the difference is mainly about which era, or which institution, the name is coming from.
